Odate Magewappa is made with great care by skilled craftsmen using Akita cedar, known as one of the finest woods in Japan. It is a craft from Odate City, Akita Prefecture, and is designated as a national traditional craft. Magewappa uses the straight grain of the annual rings, which has the most beautiful grain. The straight grain part is thinly peeled off and softened by soaking in hot water, then quickly bent to fit the mold, dried, and then moved to the next process. The dried pieces are sewn together one by one with cherry bark. The bottom is fitted so that there are no gaps, and the box is completed by filing.
